5 Fat Sandwiches Perfect for This Thanksgiving!

If you ask someone who attended Rutgers–New Brunswick what the “classic” Rutgers food is, their answer is almost always going to be the fat sandwich. The fat sandwich is such a staple of Rutgers student culture that even former U.S. President Barack Obama mentioned it during his 2016 commencement speech to graduating seniors. In the eyes of many students, consumption of at least one fat sandwich is required in order to receive your degree at graduation.

What is in a Fat Sandwich?
The easiest way to explain a fat sandwich is through photos. The image below is that of the “Fat Darrell,” which is considered one of the more traditional fat sandwiches on campus. It consists of chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, French fries, and marinara sauce. Yum!

For any Scarlet Knight deciding to stay on campus during Thanksgiving break, the right fat sandwich can be just as filling as a home-cooked feast. Here are a few selections that I think are perfect for this holiday.

#1 Fat Connery:
The Fat Connery is a calorie-stacked sandwich for the Thanksgiving meat-lover. It may not be actual turkey, but the turkey bacon in this sandwich adds a little seasonal flavor. The other ingredients are chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, French fries, ketchup, and honey mustard.

#2 Fat Dad:
This tasty meal-to-go is great for dads and students alike. Contained within its buns are heaping amounts of cheesesteak, gyro, lettuce, tomato, French fries, tzatziki sauce, and hot sauce.

#3 Fat Cat:
The Fat Cat’s claim to fame is being the first of its kind. This classic sub hosts a double cheeseburger, lettuce, tomato, French fries, mayo, and ketchup. If you want to give it a Thanksgiving twist, replace the mayo and ketchup with a light dousing of gravy.

#4 Veggie Butt:
R U a veggie lover? If so, this is the sandwich for you. Mozzarella sticks, French fries, jalapeno poppers, lettuce, tomato, and ranch dressing perfectly combine for a slightly spicy and flavor-filled meal.

#5 Fat Mojo:
To finish out the list, let’s keep it simple. Chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, French fries, and honey mustard ensure that mustard lovers have a spot secured on the menu. Give it a Thanksgiving spin by replacing the French fries and honey mustard with mashed potatoes and gravy.

Whether you attend Rutgers–New Brunswick in the future, or just stop through New Brunswick at some point, I hope the info above has prepared you to conquer your first fat sandwich. From all of us at Rutgers–New Brunswick, we wish you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving!
