I received an email titled “Rutgers Summer Programs Info for YOU!” early in the summer. When I opened it, there was information on Camp UKnight and the Discovery Program. In being an out of state student, I wasn’t able to make it to Camp UKnight so I scrolled down and read about the Discovery Program. There were three tracks that were available: service, justice, or adventure. It read, “Start with Adventure! Students will be pushed outside of their comfort zone as they explore their own leadership skills in the great outdoors!”
I was sold with that one line. Even as there was not much other information given, I was intrigued and signed up, as were 25 other people who were in my track. It was a great trip and remained a mystery as to what activities we would be doing the whole trip. They wanted to keep us on our toes and keep the element of surprise.
We did many activities like orienteering, kayaking, canoeing, climbing, and more. It was a true adventure. I made new friends, fell in a pond at the end of the raft race, tried pirogies for the first time, and learned more about myself through the experiences in this program. I highly recommend it to all incoming freshmen.
