For us first year students we are quickly approaching move-in day and what marks the beginning of our college experience! August 31st is right around the corner and it’s time to cram in shopping for dorm room supplies. However, as the first of my family to go away to a university I am baffled as to where to start. Living away for an entire year sounds as exciting as it is daunting and I’d like to prepare ahead to make the transition and experience as smooth as can be.
What I would like is for upperclassmen to comment and leave suggestions as to what I may have missed or don’t need! Additionally, I’m a guy so I apologize if the list misses a lot of supplies girls tend to bring, so please let me know what I can add.

Command strips/hooks for hanging things such as posters, bulletin board, jackets and lanyard with dorm keys attached (easier to keep track of if door is not key card operated) file cabinet is up to you but a lot of people use the 3 drawer plastic bins on rollers to store things ( tend to take up less room and are not as heavy to move). Check housing on website to see if there are pictures or a list of furniture that is already in the room (bed, dresser, desk w/chair) and if you need to bring refrig/microwave. Even if you have a meal plan these two items are good to have for making study snacks.
